Sharon Dewar, a nationally recognized communications professional, has joined Public Communications Inc. as a vice president and company officer. Dewar comes to PCI from Lincoln Park Zoo, one of the nation’s oldest zoos, where she served as director of public relations for nearly eight years. She brings more than two decades of experience in science communications, nonprofit communications, destination marketing, crisis management and animal welfare issues.
Dewar refined her crisis communication skills as a journalist and public affairs specialist in the United States Navy. During seven years of military service, Dewar assisted news agencies during major international events, including the Korean Airlines crash in Guam, the evacuation of Kurdish refugees from Iraq, tsunami aid and recovery efforts in Papua New Guinea and super-typhoon aftermath and recovery in Guam.
“Sharon’s strong strategy and counseling skills and her diverse experience – ranging from serving our country to serving nonprofits doing important work – are tremendous assets to our team,” said Jill Allread, APR, CEO. “She is deeply committed to doing quality work that helps our clients achieve their goals and improves the well-being of communities and people, which aligns with our agency’s values and desire to make a positive difference.”
Dewar has led award-winning communications campaigns that have resulted in global media attention and increased financial contributions for wildlife conservation programs. She recently returned from a trip to Central Africa where she escorted a TV crew from Al Jazeera English. The global news network highlighted a series of stories about how scientists are protecting gorillas and chimpanzees living in the Republic of Congo's Goualougo Triangle.
“I’m excited to join such an impressive group of communications professionals who are deeply devoted to serving their communities and environment,” said Dewar. “PCI is a unique agency, driven by purpose, supporting mission-driven clients. It is truly a privilege to join this team. I’m looking forward to providing strategic leadership that will deliver positive results for our clients.”
Dewar, 40, lives with her family in Oak Park, Ill. She received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of La Verne in Southern California and a master’s degree in communications management from Webster University, St. Louis.
